To start off with, I am a twenty-one year old waitress living in a small town, studying journalism at my local college, although, I’m taking a semester or two off for personal reasons. For years, people have been in love with my ability to write, and pushing me to write my own stories or create my own blog so others may enjoy my gift, but I’ve never found the muse to start anything for years, until today. While at work, I got to thinking after an interesting conversation with a customer and a co-working, that the most interesting stories or events that ever happen to me are at work, and that I could write a book on everything that I hear. And BOOM! The idea to start my blog started plotting in the back of my mind. Since, nothing note-worthy happened today, other than a very cheerful, slow evening I’ll start with a story from my past.
It was a Saturday night in February, decently busy after the rush we had from all the sweet, elderly couples coming in for dinner after that evening’s church service, and in comes this cute, and seemingly older, gentlemen come up to the counter for a to-go order for him and his parents. I was in a pretty happy talkative mood that evening, and nonchalantly took his order as we started up a conversation about college and happenings around town. The guy himself, I learned was still living with his parents or at least very close to them that he was buying them dinner, and had already graduated from college, and in my opinion was probably in his late twenty’s, possibly early thirties if I really wanted to push his age. It wasn’t until I got his order all wrapped up, and set it in front of him that things started to get a little weird.
I shook the feeling off, cashed him out, and then went to take care of my other tables, but when I came back to put orders up and get soups, he was still there! I brought it up to the other waitress working with me, giving each other odd looks of confusion as we continued with our work. When, I had a free moment, I went to talk with him again, and with a nervous edge to his voice he just replied that he was waiting for his car to warm up.
Ten minutes later, the man was still sitting at the counter with his bag of food in front of him, watching the other waitress move around the room. I shook my head and continued on finishing my side work, thinking the guy just wanted to talk to the other girl, but suddenly the other waitress went into the kitchen and the guy turned his attention to me, clearly extremely nervous now. I responded fully expecting him to be asking to a drink or dessert or something like that, but instead I got “Hey, um, you’re really beautiful. And I was wondering if you would let me take you out to dinner?”
I swear to God, if I wasn’t working, I probably would have let my jaw drop and most likely would have laughed. Instead, I now had to come up with a hasty response to this. Yeah, the guy was cute, and I might have said yes years ago, but I’m a completely different person since than, plus I don’t think my boyfriend would be too pleased on me going on dates with complete strangers, or even going on dates at all that weren’t with him. So, as nicely as I could, feeling a little bad that I had to let him down, quickly thanking him and telling him I had a boyfriend. As soon as those words came out of my mouth, I felt bad that I had completely shattered this guys confidence, because as soon as I did, this poor guy quickly got up, apologized and thanked me, before flying out the door.
Seconds after the guy left, the other waitress popped around from the kitchen after apparently talking with our boss, asking if the guy finally just left, stating that both of them were confused at why he had been sitting there so long. Quickly, I relayed to her what had happened, both of us laughing so hard, although mine was more from the shock from the situation than anything,
The moral of this story, is guys, please ask the waitress if they’re single or at least poke and prod for information about a said boyfriend before asking her out. She’ll feel terrible about saying no, especially if you were extremely cute! And to avoid some awkward situations!
Until next time!
